Coming Of Spring Brings Seed Catalogs
This year’s price of a packet of 20 tomato seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds is a mere $2.25. The variety I’m considering is called Furry Yellow Hog, and the catalog copy suggests that it has citrus notes and a four o’clock shadow, two traits I have never associated with a tomato.
At some point, consumer choice begins to feel oppressive. It’s not about the money: Who would compare the value of a bumper tomato crop with the cost of a single subway fare? The problem is risk. What if the germinating seeds never awaken from their dirt nap? Or what if the tomatoes thrive, but taste like Play-Doh? Two hundred and twenty-eight varieties and I wasted a whole summer on a dud?
