Gardening On The Cheap

February 26th, 2010 admin Posted in Gardening No Comments »

Vegetable gardening increased 19 percent last season as 43 million folks chose it as a hobby that also saves money. Then the newcomers went to the store and were shocked to find all the expensive gardening paraphernalia. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Minimum for tools are a shovel, rake, hoe and a trowel. You could buy these for $120, or do what I do — hit the garage sales. Everybody with a house has gardening tools. Almost every garage sale has tools. I’d say the average price of the quartet above is way less than $20. Read the rest of this entry »

Garden Your Way

February 8th, 2010 admin Posted in Gardening No Comments »

When choosing a title for this column the name of our county, Pickaway, was a natural. It also has other interpretations, which gave rise to this column’s name. You may remember as a kid, if you grew up here, when asked where you were from you would pinch the person several times and say, “Pick away!” It is another interpretation, which I want to explore.

You really can pick a way to garden. Chances are most of us have already made that choice whether it was conscious or not. There are several types of gardening to choose from: raised beds, rows, square foot, containers, rain gardens, greenhouse, etc. You can also practice most of these types of gardening indoors or outdoors. Some people like their flowerbeds to have a theme such as a white garden where all the blooms are white. Others like their flowerbeds to be a riot of color. Read the rest of this entry »

Sharing Plants With Your Friends

January 29th, 2010 Editor Posted in Gardening No Comments »

One of the great joys of gardening is sharing plants with friends. And many plants can be reproduced without the long process of cross pollination and seed production; you can just take a part of the existing plant and tend it until new roots or shoots form. There are several ways to do this.

Quite a few plants have the ability to grow new roots from pieces of stems that have been separated from the parent. These are referred to as stem cuttings. Some plants will only form roots on the stems of tender soft tissue, while others, such as shrubs, will only form roots on older, firmer stems. Read the rest of this entry »

Coming Of Spring Brings Seed Catalogs

January 23rd, 2010 Editor Posted in Gardening No Comments »

This year’s price of a packet of 20 tomato seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds is a mere $2.25. The variety I’m considering is called Furry Yellow Hog, and the catalog copy suggests that it has citrus notes and a four o’clock shadow, two traits I have never associated with a tomato.

At some point, consumer choice begins to feel oppressive. It’s not about the money: Who would compare the value of a bumper tomato crop with the cost of a single subway fare? The problem is risk. What if the germinating seeds never awaken from their dirt nap? Or what if the tomatoes thrive, but taste like Play-Doh? Two hundred and twenty-eight varieties and I wasted a whole summer on a dud? Gardening At The White House Through The Years

January 15th, 2010 Editor Posted in Gardening No Comments »

WASHINGTON, D.C. —

THOMAS JEFFERSON: Jefferson (1801-1809) hired the first White House gardener, who also was responsible for cultivating a “kitchen” garden. But it wasn’t until 1825, when John Quincy Adams became president, that the vegetable garden and surrounding grounds began to flourish. Adams established a nursery for tree seedlings and a two-acre garden filled with vegetables, herbs and fruit trees, as well as flowers, shrubs and shade trees.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN: By the 1840s, a new kitchen garden had been planted southwest of the White House. Receipts for the seeds show that Lincoln and his wife, Mary Todd, enjoyed an assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables. The kitchen garden was removed in 1871, during the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant, due to the construction of West Executive Avenue. Read the rest of this entry »

Cover Yourself During Your Next Move

January 8th, 2010 Editor Posted in Gardening No Comments »

So you’ve finally moved into your new house and currently unpacking your stuff to make your new home beautiful and comfortable. But what about insurance, did you get the right amount to cover your new home? When changing place of residence, even moving to another house in the same block, there are much more things influenced by your actions than homeowners insurance. Here’s a list of things you should consider analyzing and adjusting when moving to another place of residence.

Homeowners insurance

In case you’ve financed your new house purchase through a mortgage loan, your loan company will most likely require you to have homeowners insurance. Still, there’s a big difference in coverage amounts that comply with mortgage requirements and those, which meet your personal insurance needs. There may be special items you want to cover with your homeowners insurance (such as jewelry, pieces of art, or any other expensive objects), so getting an additional floater to your standard policy would be quite wise. You could also learn what are the additional risks in your new area of residence and get adequate insurance coverage for cases of flood, earthquakes, firestorms if any apply.

Flood insurance

Standard homeowners insurance policies do not carry any coverage in cases of flood and associated damage. Not only those who live near big rivers and oceans need flood insurance coverage. Only if you’re not living in a Designated Flood Area, you most likely need flood insurance. The company providing you homeowners insurance will likely to have flood coverage too, so ask your provider when moving to another house.

Car insurance

You may think that there’s no direct connection between auto and home insurance, but unfortunately that’s not true. In case you’re involved in a serious traffic accident and the damage exceeds your liability coverage limits, some of your most important assets (such as your new home) could be lost due to legal action. That is why it is important to revise both your home insurance and auto insurance policies to make sure you have just the right amount of liability coverage to have your house protected against any claims. In order to do so, it would be wise to consider umbrella coverage, so ask your insurance company about that. If you have both your home and auto insurance with the same company you may get more favorable rates on this one.

Life insurance

No one likes thinking about unpleasant things but what if you pass away while having your mortgage still un-financed? Do you want your family members to carry this burden and sacrifice things like your child’s college education or medical insurance? By getting life insurance you assure that your mortgage loan will be paid off no matter what. Besides, if you investigate the question a bit deeper, you will find certain term life insurance that provide benefits after a certain period of time while you’re still alive. On the other hand, some continuous life insurance policies have investments aspects with them, which would be nice if you have an extended mortgage deal.
